Do you want a dog like
the Taco Bell dog?
Or like the Beverly Hills Chihuahua?
There's no denying that they're cute, but are they the
right dog for your family? Read this first!
What type of Dog is the Taco
Bell Dog?
The Taco Bell Dog was played by a
female Chihuahua named Gidget.
What is the history behind the
Chihuahua
According to
Chihuahua Rescue and Transport
legend
and history of this breed is "rich in tales of the ancestors of
the present Chihuahua. He is described as a popular pet, as well
as a religious necessity, among the ancient Toltec tribes and
later among the Aztecs. Archaeologists have discovered remains
of this breed in human graves in Mexico and in parts of the
United States."
Does their
size restrict them?
The American Kennel Club states that a Chihuahua should be no
larger than 6 pounds. Pet quality dogs may vary from this, but
the Chihuahua is still the smallest dog breed recognized by the
AKC. Because of this interaction with other dogs and children
should always be monitored.
Because of this
size, the Chihuahua runs the risk of being a victim of birds of
prey, and appropriate precautions should always be exercised.
Also because of
their size, they should never live outside, as they are
sensitive to extreme temperatures.
What is their energy level?
Moderate. They do not require a lot of
outside exercise, but they can be high-strung.
What type of grooming will they
need?
Chihuahuas come in both long and short
coats. Both coat types are moderate shedders. Longhaired coats
should be brushed every day to prevent matting.
What other personality traits do
they exhibit?
Alert, and very terrier-like. They
must be socialized very carefully (because of their sized) early
on, as they tend to become easily reactive toward other dogs.
Chihuahuas have a reputation for only tolerating other
Chihuahuas.
They are loyal
and playful with those they love, preferring to travel with them
rather than be left behind.
Some background about Gidget (the
canine actor who stars in the Taco Bell spots):
According to Gidget's
website " The ads, created by TBWA
Chiat/Day creative directors Chuck Bennett and Clay Williams,
were born while the duo was lunching in Venice, Calif., and saw
a Chihuahua 'cruising alone down the boardwalk, looking large
and in charge,' says Bennett. After a casting call, Gidget's
bat-like ears, expressive eyes, and natural acting ability got
her the gig.
Gidget also
appeared in Legally Blonde 2.
